2013 BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe

The presentation of the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe sees BMW venturing into a new vehicle segment once again. The third model in the BMW 6 Series line-up follows in the tyre tracks of the Convertible and Coupe, and is the first four-door Coupe in the history of the brand. The athletic elegance of the car’s design makes it a particularly handsome addition to the range. Powerful engines and sophisticated chassis technology combine to produce an impressively dynamic driving experience. And the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe also makes its mark with exclusive equipment features and a level of practicality unmatched by its premium four-door Coupe rivals.

The design: athletic elegance and an exclusive aura.

The BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe integrates the stand-out looks and dynamics of a Coupe into a fresh new model with a fascinating character all of its own. The hallmark proportions of a BMW are reproduced in an unusually low-slung, sporty package given the car’s four-door construction. And they are defined by a fresh interpretation of the three-box design: a sweeping, powerfully contoured bonnet, a long wheelbase – giving the car an elegantly stretched appearance – and a set-back passenger compartment. In addition, its low height and a roof line that flows in a shallow arc into the rear allow the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe to set a new aesthetic benchmark for four-door cars.

The design of the interior creates a harmonious link between the front seats and the rear, and embodies the perfect combination of elegance and dynamics. The driver-focused cockpit, front passenger area bordered by elegantly sweeping surfaces and generously sized rear compartment combine joy in the car’s dynamic potential with travel comfort amid a stylish and luxurious ambience. The BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe comes with 4+1 seats, while a 113-millimetre longer wheelbase than the BMW 6 Series Coupe allows it to offer a noticeable increase in legroom for the rear passengers. Plus, a through-loading facility and folding rear seat backrests give a further boost to practicality and increase boot capacity from 460 litres to 1,265 litres.

The driving experience: a picture of dynamics and comfort.

The BMW TwinPower Turbo engines available for the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe major in sportiness and efficiency. The six-cylinder in-line petrol engine in the BMW 640i Gran Coupe develops 235 kW/320 hp, while the straight-six diesel powering the BMW 640d Gran Coupe serves up 230 kW/313 hp. The icing on the cake of the model range will be provided by the BMW 650i Gran Coupe and its 330 kW/450 hp V8 powerplant. The BMW TwinPower Turbo technology of the new-generation eight-cylinder unit now also includes VALVETRONIC fully variable valve timing. All the engine variants work in tandem with an eight-speed sports automatic transmission, while measures such as the Auto Start-Stop function and ECO PRO mode – activated using the Driving Experience Control switch – help to reduce fuel consumption. The BMW 650i Gran Coupe will also be available with BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive.

The chassis technology built into the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe includes a double-wishbone front axle, an integral rear axle, Electric Power Steering and a high-performance braking system. Plus, the Servotronic function and Dynamic Damper Control both also come as standard. Among the items on the options list are Integral Active Steering and the Adaptive Drive system.

Equipment: exclusive features, innovative technology.

As well as the eight-speed sports automatic transmission and Dynamic Damper Control, the high-quality and extensive range of standard equipment awaiting BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe customers in Germany includes electrically adjustable leather seats, 2-zone automatic climate control, xenon headlights, 18-inch light-alloy wheels, the Radio Professional with HiFi loudspeaker system, and automatically dimming exterior and rear-view mirrors. The selection of exclusive options, meanwhile, allows customers to add their own individual touch. Highlights of the optional equipment range include adaptive LED headlights and the Bang & Olufsen High-End Surround Sound System. Added to which, a bespoke M Sport package and options from BMW Individual developed exclusively for the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe will be offered from launch.

The line-up of driver assistance systems and mobility services from BMW ConnectedDrive includes BMW Parking Assistant, Surround View, Collision Warning with braking function (in conjunction with Active Cruise Control), Lane Change Warning, Lane Departure Warning, Speed Limit Info, the anti-dazzle High-Beam Assistant, BMW Night Vision with pedestrian recognition and the BMW Head-Up Display.

The BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe will be produced at BMW Plant Dingolfing alongside the BMW 6 Series Coupe and Convertible, BMW 5 Series and BMW 7 Series Luxury Sedan.

The Design

First four-door Coupe in the history of the BMW brand.
Harmonious proportions and distinctive BMW 6 Series styling

BMW is driving ahead the expansion of its model range with its first venture into the world of four-door Coupes. The design of the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe body sees the basic form of the BMW 6 Series imbued with the character profile of a four-door car. Harmonious proportions, precise lines and sleekly contoured surfaces give the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe its unique allure. The length (5,007 millimetres) and wheelbase (2,968 millimetres) of the new model represent an increase of 113 millimetres in both cases over the BMW 6 Series Coupe. A significant part of this extra length has been used to enhance seating comfort for the rear passengers. The BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe is 1,894 millimetres wide and stands 1,392 millimetres in height.

The driver-focused cockpit, front passenger area bordered by elegantly sweeping surfaces, harmonious connection between the front seats and the rear compartment, and generous levels of space for the rear passengers bring together joy in the car’s dynamic potential and travel comfort set within a stylish and luxurious ambience.

The front end: eye-catching presence and a clear connection with the road.

The large air intakes, the slightly forward-leaning, low-set BMW kidney grille, the hallmark BMW twin round headlights and the contour lines of the bonnet – converging forwards in a V-shape – lend the front end of the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe an expressive presence. The BMW kidney grille has a wide, sporty look, and the grille slats, angled slightly towards the top, accentuate the “shark nose” character of the front end.

The BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe can be ordered with Adaptive LED Headlights as an alternative to the standard xenon units. The LED lights feature bright white, three-dimensional LED light rings for the parking lights and daytime running lights, which are levelled off at the lower edge and overlapped at their top edge by an accent light – also featuring LEDs. The result is a new interpretation of the intent look familiar from other BMW models which is clearly visible both during the day and in darkness. Low and high beam are both generated from the two light rings, accentuating the brand’s hallmark twin round headlight look whatever the light conditions. The source of the light is LED units positioned on a horizontal LED rib in the centre of the units, which disperse their light into the reflectors in front of them. The three-dimensional design of the light units – transparent extensions for the light rings allow light to flood through them – provide an impressive showcase for the LED technology when viewed from the side. LED units also serve the direction indicators positioned under the light rings.

Powerfully flared wheel arches and the optional LED foglamps, placed well to the outside, accentuate the width of the front end. The lower air intake is split into three sections by model-specific L-shaped electroplated bars, which pick up the contours of the bonnet lines and BMW kidney grille to add extra intensity to the road-focused stance of the front end.

The side view: athletic elegance and natural sportiness.

With its long, powerfully contoured bonnet, set-back passenger compartment, long wheelbase and short overhangs, the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe presents a fresh take on the hallmark proportions of a BMW car. The Gran Coupe’s distinctive appearance is dominated by its four-door construction, longer wheelbase than other BMW 6 Series models and likewise longer passenger compartment. The low, elegantly stretched roof line, which flows smoothly into the rear end, is a similarly eye-catching and distinctive feature of the new model’s silhouette.

The combination of sporting credibility, luxurious exclusiveness and stylish practicality is particularly clear when viewed from the side. Longer side window surfaces than those found on the two-door BMW 6 Series models hint at the extra space available in the rear compartment and give the car a sense of both sporting verve and reassuring gravitas. Side windows extending far back into the C-pillar give the passenger compartment the low-slung, stretched look typical of Coupes. Added to which, the long strips of glass also allow light to flood the interior, further enhancing the feeling of space inside and all-round visibility for the rear passengers. High-quality Chrome Line Exterior surrounds for the side windows can be specified as an option. The hallmark BMW Hofmeister kink at the transition to the C-pillar is given an extra touch of exclusivity in the form of etched “Gran Coupe” model lettering set against a sporty lozenge structure in the rear section of the side window.

Powerfully flowing surfaces – which open out as they extend back from the front end and stretch over the full length of the body before feeding into the muscular rear end – give the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe a naturally sporty look. As with the other BMW 6 Series models, they are given their structure by precisely drawn lines. The swage line streaming out from the gill on the front wheel arch takes in the door handle and runs the full length of the car, emphasising the athletic elegance of its side view. Around the rear wheels, the surfaces below the swage line push outwards, enhancing the impression of a powerful car with a strong, assured stance on the road. Plus, the light surfaces generated above the rear wheel arches draw further attention to the wide track and the power being channelled through the rear wheels.

Another character line, emerging from the curvature of the front wheel arch, drops down between the gill feature and the door, before levelling out and extending horizontally to the rear. The unbroken shadow surface above the side sill emphasises the car’s muscular stance from the side.

The rear-end design: horizontal lines and clean surfaces.

Clearly structured surfaces and horizontal lines add further presence to the car’s powerful rear end, which acts as a pointer to the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe’s impressive roadholding and the sporting brief of the vehicle concept as a whole. The rear end becomes noticeably broader as it heads towards the road and the wheel arches bulge prominently into view. All of which gives the tail an extremely low visual centre of gravity. All the elements of the rear end have a broad, low-set design. The conspicuously flared wheel arches spotlight the car’s wide track and underline the horizontally structured character of the rear. The boot lid and rear apron both have flatter surfacing than their counterparts on the other BMW 6 Series models. The more clearly sculpted sill emphasises the overall volume of the rear end and brings striking details such as the rear lights and exhaust tailpipes more clearly to the fore.

The two-part, L-shaped rear lights share the contours of the car’s BMW 6 Series siblings and each use a pair of LED light strips to generate the distinctive night-time look of a BMW car. The third brake light is integrated into the roof and stretches the full length of the rear window.

Interior: driver focus and luxurious ambience.

The interior of the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe reveals the driver-focused cockpit design typical of the brand and a luxurious ambience for all those on board. The central section of the instrument panel is angled slightly towards the driver and the gear selector for the automatic gearbox, the Driving Experience Control switch and the activation button for the parking brake are all positioned on the surface of the centre console which opens out towards the driver.

The standard-fitted iDrive operating system comes with a flatscreen on-board monitor. If the Navigation system Professional is specified, this is upgraded to a 10.2-inch display bordered by a galvanised chrome surround.

Long horizontal lines coursing all the way through the interior of the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe create a visual link with the second row of seats, emphasising the size of the interior. The elegant lines of the door trim, familiar from the other BMW 6 Series models, continue into the rear compartment, incorporating the B-pillar as a design element along the way. The sweeping design of the door panels flows harmoniously from the front doors via the B-pillars to the rear doors. The centre console also stretches through to the rear. Precise contours help to create an intriguing contrast with the interior’s soft, curvaceous surfaces, producing a vibrant and dynamic collage of forms.

The waistline surfaces of the doors form a subtly dynamic wedge shape, which extends into the luggage compartment cover. The dynamic character of the door surface design generates a feeling of depth which envelops the passengers in their seats, while the interplay of convex and concave surfaces evokes a sense of exclusive security.

Sporting verve and generous rear space.

The interior of the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe offers a driving experience defined by sportiness and exclusiveness, and enhanced by a specially generated ambience. The line of the roof pillars reproduces the car’s arching roof form inside the car. In the rear compartment the enveloping interior typical of a Coupe and comfortable seats offering excellent lateral support combined with generous freedom of movement and good visibility both forwards and out of the car. The BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe offers 4+1 seating capacity as standard, while comfort levels in the rear are raised another notch by features including additional air vents in the centre console.

The BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe can be ordered in a choice of eight metallic exterior paint shades and two non-metallic colours. Other exclusive paint finishes are available as part of the BMW Individual range and in conjunction with the M Sport package. The colours and materials available for the interior, meanwhile, have been selected to enhance the feeling of elegant sportiness and luxury, and can be tailored to the customer’s personal style. The standard Dakota leather can be ordered in a choice of three colours, the optional Exclusive Nappa leather in four different shades. The instrument panel, door trim and centre console are also available as an option with Exclusive Nappa leather coverings. And double French seams in a contrasting colour to suit the seat covers can be ordered in preference to single seams in Black. Customers can also choose from four interior trim strip variants and optional ceramic applications for the gear selector, iDrive Controller and other controls.

Powerful six-cylinder in-line and V8 engines with latest-generation BMW TwinPower Turbo technology give all model versions of the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe their sporty potential. All of the engines embody the hallmark BMW brand characteristics: fast-revving performance, effortless power delivery and refinement, plus efficiency. In the BMW 640i Gran Coupe, the multi-award-winning six-cylinder petrol engine with twin-scroll turbocharger, direct injection and VALVTETRONIC produces maximum power of 235 kW/320 hp, while the six-cylinder BMW 640d Gran Coupe diesel model offer a combination of power and fuel efficiency which would be unusual even outside the luxury class. Maximum output is 230 kW/313 hp and average fuel consumption between 5.6 and 5.7 litres per 100 km (49.6 – 50.4 mpg imp) (figures acc. to EU test cycle and depending on tyre format). This is achieved by combining the six-cylinder diesel engine with latest-generation variable two-stage turbocharging and common-rail direct injection. Completing the line-up is the BMW 650i Gran Coupe, whose new V8 engine now features VALVETRONIC variable valve timing and develops maximum power of 330 kW/450 hp.

An eight-speed sports automatic transmission and the Driving Experience Control function are standard on all model versions. One of the settings that can be selected with this function is ECO PRO mode, which supports a fuel-efficient driving style. Auto Start-Stop is likewise standard on all three models and makes a further contribution to enhanced efficiency.

In all cases the engine power of the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe is translated effortlessly into dynamic performance and outstanding refinement, thanks to top-class chassis technology. Electric Power Steering with Servotronic comes as standard, as does Dynamic Damper Control. Options include Integral Active Steering and the Adaptive Drive system, which includes anti-roll stabilisation. For the BMW 650i Gran Coupe, BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive is available too.

More power, more efficiency: V8 engine with ‘BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, including VALVETRONIC.

The top-of-the-line BMW 650i Gran Coupe debuts the latest generation of the 4.4-litre V8 engine with BMW TwinPower technology. Its two turbochargers, which sit in the V between the cylinder banks, and High Precision Direct Petrol Injection are now joined by VALVETRONIC variable valve timing, which optimises both efficiency and response.

The new technology package increases maximum power to 330 kW/450 hp, which is available between 5,500 and 6,000 rpm, and maximum torque to 650 Newton metres (479 lb-ft) between 2,000 and 4,500 rpm. Fuel consumption and emissions performance have been improved as well. The BMW 650i Gran Coupe accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.6 seconds. Its average fuel consumption lies between 8.6 and 8.8 litres per 100 kilometres (32.1 – 32.9 mpg imp), with CO2 emissions of between 199 and 206 grams per kilometres (provisional figures; fuel consumption and emissions figures acc. to EU test cycle and depending on tyre format).

When the V8 is combined with the xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system, its power is converted into even more intense and dynamic acceleration. The electronically controlled power split between the front and rear wheels optimises not only traction and stability, whatever the weather and road surface conditions, but also the agility of the BMW 650i xDrive Gran Coupe, whose sprint time from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) is just 4.5 seconds. Average fuel consumption is between 9.2 and 9.4 litres per 100 kilometres (30.1 – 30.7 mpg imp), with CO2 emissions of between 215 and 219 grams per kilometre (provisional figures; fuel consumption and emissions figures acc. to EU test cycle and depending on tyre format).

As embodied in the six-in-line petrol engine of the BMW 640i Gran Coupe, the BMW TwinPower Turbo technology again comprises a turbocharging system, High Precision Injection and VALVETRONIC. Unlike on the V8 engine, however, twin-scroll turbocharging is used. The exhaust gas pulses from each bank of three cylinders are fed through two separate channels to the turbine wheel. This produces maximum power of 235 kW/320 hp, at 5,800 to 6,000 rpm, from a displacement of 3.0 litres. Maximum torque of 450 Newton metres (332 lb-ft) is on tap between 1,300 and 4,500 rpm. The BMW 640i Gran Coupe accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.4 seconds. Average fuel consumption is between 7.8 and 7.9 litres per 100 kilometres (35.8 – 36.2 mpg imp), with CO2 emissions between 181 and 183 grams per kilometre (figures acc. to EU test cycle and depending on tyre format).

For the straight-six diesel engine of the BMW 640d Gran Coupe, the BMW TwinPower Turbo technology comprises the latest-generation variable two-stage turbocharging system, and common-rail direct injection with piezo injectors. The 3.0-litre all-aluminium engine develops maximum power of 230 kW/313 hp at 4,400 rpm, while peak torque of 630 Newton metres (465 lb-ft) is on stream between 1,500 and 2,500 rpm. In this case the turbocharging system comprises a small variable turbocharger and a larger turbocharger, which work together in close synchronisation to boost power delivery across the entire throttle range. The BMW 640d Gran Coupe accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.4 seconds. Its average fuel consumption is just 5.6 to 5.7 litres per 100 kilometres (49.6 – 50.4 mpg imp), with CO2 emissions of between 148 and 149 g per kilometre (figures acc. to EU test cycle and depending on tyre format).

On all model versions, the power is managed by an eight-speed sports automatic transmission. With its extremely fast gear changes this unit is built for sporty driving, comfortable shifting and optimised efficiency. It is operated using the electronic gear selector on the centre console. For manual gear changing, this transmission comes with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifts.

High-end chassis technology for a perfect balance between dynamics and comfort.

The chassis of the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe is based on a double-wishbone front axle and an integral rear axle, both of which consist largely of aluminium. Their design offers an excellent basis for combining sporty handling characteristics with a comfortable ride.

The BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe is standard-fitted with Dynamic Damper Control, whose electronically controlled dampers adapt both to the road surface conditions and to driving style. Handling characteristics can be further enhanced with the optional Adaptive Drive system, which includes active anti-roll stabilisation. Amongst other things, the electronically controlled anti-roll bars reduce body roll during fast cornering or sudden manoeuvres.

The Electric Power Steering of the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe is equipped as standard with a Servotronic speed-sensitive power assist function. Uniquely in this class, the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe can also optionally be equipped with Integral Active Steering, which not only steers the front wheels and provides speed-sensitive power assistance but also steers the rear wheels. Precise coordination of the turning angles of the wheels provides a high level of agility in dynamic driving situations, comfortable and effortless vehicle reactions when changing lanes and on bends, and optimised manoeuvrability in tight hairpins and around town.

Driving Experience Control: the ideal set-up at the press of a button.

The Driving Experience Control switch on the centre console is used to switch between the drive settings COMFORT+, COMFORT, SPORT, SPORT+ and ECO PRO mode. The Driving Experience Control switch allows the driver to alter accelerator response characteristics, engine response, the power steering characteristics, the DSC settings, the damper characteristics and the shift characteristics of the automatic transmission. If the vehicle is equipped with Adaptive Drive, the anti-roll characteristics are modified too. Each of these predefined set-ups is configured as a synchronised overall package.

A further button can be used to separately adjust the DSC settings. This button can be used to activate the traction mode DTC (Dynamic Traction Control), which makes for easier driving and moving off on loose sand or in deep snow. The electromechanical parking brake of the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe is operated by a button on the centre console.

Lightweight brake system and DSC stability control.

The combination of the highly efficient lightweight brake system, with its large vented brake discs, and DSC stability control provides highest standards of active safety. The DSC functionality includes DTC, Dynamic Brake Control (DBC), Cornering Brake Control (CBC), Dry Braking, Fading Compensation and Start-Off Assistant. In Germany, the standard specification also includes 18-inch alloy wheels for all model versions.

All model versions of the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe offer an exceptionally good balance between sporty performance and fuel consumption thanks to extensive use of the latest BMW EfficientDynamics technology.

All the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe models are powered by BMW TwinPower Turbo engines. The technical details of the TwinPower Turbo package, which provides maximum efficiency and optimal power response, differ from vehicle to vehicle. This package allows both the petrol engines and the diesel engine to develop the kind of power that would normally require much larger displacement, which would mean adding to weight and fuel consumption.

BMW TwinPower Turbo technology: for each engine, the ideal solution for increased efficiency and driving enjoyment.

The BMW 650i Gran Coupe showcases the latest results of continuous engine development work at BMW: the new-generation 4.4-litre V8 engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. The BMW TwinPower Turbo package for the V8 now includes two turbochargers housed in the V between the cylinder banks, High Precision Direct Petrol Injection and VALVETRONIC variable valve timing. Seamlessly variable control of intake valve lift keeps pumping losses to a minimum, so that the energy content of the fuel is utilised more efficiently. Compared with the previous engine, the new V8 features a 10 per cent power upgrade to 330 kW/450 hp and a 50 Nm (almost 37 lb-ft) increase in maximum torque to 650 Newton metres (479 lb-ft). In parallel with improved power and response, VALVETRONIC also significantly reduces fuel consumption and emissions.

The 3.0-litre engine of the BMW 640i Gran Coupe comes with twin-scroll turbocharging, which means that the exhaust gases from each bank of three cylinders are fed through two separate channels in the exhaust manifold and the turbine. This engine too features High Precision Injection and VALVETRONIC.

The BMW TwinPower Turbo technology for the six-cylinder in-line diesel engine of the BMW 640d Gran Coupe boasts further improved variable two-stage turbocharging and modified common-rail direct injection, with piezo injectors that operate at a pressure of up to 2,000 bar.

Eight-speed automatic transmission and Auto Start-Stop function.

A further important contribution to increased efficiency is made by the standard-fitted eight-speed sports automatic transmission, with its innovative gearing design, low weight and high internal efficiency. The minimal torque converter slip, low friction losses (since no more than two clutches are ever open at the same time in any gear), higher gearing in the higher ratios, and transmission logic which favours lower-rpm operation all add up to significant fuel savings.

Both the six and the eight-cylinder versions of the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe also come with an Auto Start-Stop function as standard specification, which prevents wasteful idling by automatically shutting off the engine when the vehicle is temporarily stationary in traffic.

Also, all engine versions can be operated in ECO PRO mode, which is activated using the Driving Experience Control switch. This modifies the engine management characteristics, the accelerator mapping and the shift characteristics of the automatic transmission, and supports a low-rpm driving style for optimised fuel consumption. Also in this mode, electrically powered functions such as the air conditioning, heated seats and heated exterior mirrors are programmed for optimal energy efficiency.

Also standard is Brake Energy Regeneration, whose intelligent energy management system ensures that, as far as possible, power for the vehicle electrical system is generated only during braking and overrun. Other BMW EfficientDynamics measures include on-demand operation of ancillary units, Electric Power Steering, a disengageable air-conditioning compressor and active air flap control for reduced drag. At the same time, intelligent lightweight design reduces weight and so improves fuel consumption and emissions.

Intelligently connecting the driver, the vehicle and the outside world, BMW ConnectedDrive sets new benchmarks for convenience, safety and infotainment. As standard, the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe is equipped with Cruise Control with braking function. The optional Cruise Control with Stop & Go function also includes automatic distance control, which allows the driver to cruise comfortably in free-flowing traffic on motorways and main roads and which continues to maintain a pre-set following distance even when creeping along in slow-moving traffic.

A collision warning system with braking function is also onboard. This system uses radar sensors and a camera mounted behind the windscreen next to the rear-view mirror to monitor the distance from the vehicle ahead. The collision warning system features a two-stage alarm scenario. The first stage is simply a visual warning. If the driver needs to intervene very quickly, however, the system generates an acute warning, while at the same time activating automatic braking.

BMW ConnectedDrive driver assistance systems and mobility services: unique in this class.

For the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe, as for the BMW 6 Series Coupe and the BMW 6 Series Convertible, many other driver assistance systems are available to increase comfort and safety.

For example, the Park Distance Control system (PDC) can optionally be supplemented by a rear-view camera fitted under the BMW badge in the boot lid and by the Surround View system (including Side View), while safety in the dark can be improved with the optional anti-dazzle High-Beam Assistant system and BMW Night Vision with pedestrian recognition. Also available are the BMW Parking Assistant, Lane Departure Warning and Lane Change Warning systems.

The new-generation BMW Head-Up Display now features improved display quality with full-colour graphics. This ensures that the symbols projected onto the windscreen are as realistic as possible.

Working in conjunction with the Navigation system Professional, Speed Limit Info detects speed limits and allows the driver to check what limit applies on the section of road he is currently travelling on. The BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe also has a speed limiter function.

Using the BMW Connected app, the BMW ConnectedDrive Apps function gives Apple iPhone owners in-car access to web-based applications. This means they can use Web radio functions and can show Facebook and Twitter posts and personal calendar entries on the iDrive monitor.

Also available is the Real-Time Traffic Information function, which transmits extremely precise traffic information and diversion recommendations to the navigation system. In the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe, too, BMW ConnectedDrive customers can use the iDrive control system to access the internet. In 2008, BMW became the first carmaker in the world to offer in-car internet access.

The first four-door Coupe from the BMW brand sets new standards in this segment with regard to both the styling and the functional characteristics of its bodywork and interior. The BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe is able to seat up to five occupants: the rear compartment of the 4+1 seater offers high standards of travel comfort for two passengers, while on short journeys a third seat can also be used. The generous head, leg and shoulder room in the rear is combined with a spacious luggage compartment, whose capacity can be flexibly expanded as necessary. The weight-optimised body is also very stiff.

The slim profile of the B-pillar trim in the footwell area and the wide door opening which extends well to the rear allow easier entry and exit for rear-seat passengers. Large side windows, despite the low Coupe roofline, and a slightly higher seating position than in the BMW 6 Series Coupe make for improved visibility. The luggage compartment has a capacity of 460 litres and can accommodate up to three 46-inch golf bags. If the 40:60 split-folding backrest is folded down, the capacity can be increased to 1,265 litres. The two backrest sections can be unlocked and folded down using two levers inside the luggage compartment. A through-load system is also fitted, which among other things can be used to store the optional ski bag.

Intelligent multi-material mix.

The four doors – with frameless side windows – and the bonnet are made of aluminium. Similarly the axles and engines have a high aluminium content. The front spring supports are of cast aluminium, the front sidewalls of thermoplastic and the boot lid of glass fibre composite.

Use of higher-strength multi-phase steels and hot-stamped ultra-high-tensile steel helps give the safety passenger cell maximum rigidity while at the same time optimising weight.

The standard safety specification comprises front airbags, backrest-integrated side airbags, head airbags front and rear, three-point inertia-reel belts for all seats, front-seat active head restraints, belt force limiters and belt-pretensioners, and ISOFIX child seat attachment systems in the rear, which can be accessed by opening a zip in the leather upholstery. To improve passive pedestrian protection, in some markets the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe comes with an active bonnet.

Optimal visibility: bi-xenon lighting standard; Adaptive LED Headlights and LED foglamps optional.

The standard-fitted bi-xenon headlamps of the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe provide excellent road illumination. The distinctive corona rings are powered by LED units and produce a strikingly bright white light. They can be operated on two different power settings, as either side lights or daytime running lights. Optionally, Adaptive Headlights are available.

A further option is Adaptive LED Headlights. Again, this is a “road-following” lighting system. The headlights swivel in line with the steering angle, yaw rate and speed of the vehicle. A cornering light function is also included: when making a turn, an additional light beam is activated which illuminates the road in the direction the vehicle is turning. Also included in the Adaptive LED Headlight specification is High-Beam Assist, which helps drivers get the most out of high-beam mode. BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe models fitted with Adaptive LED Headlights also feature LED direction indicators.

Also available as an option are LED foglamps, each of which comprises three LED units side by side. At the rear, LED-powered light strips give the rear lights the typical BMW night-time look. The direction indicators and brake lights are LED-powered as well. To reduce the risk of rear-end collisions, the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe is also equipped with dynamic brake lights. When the driver brakes very sharply and the ABS system intervenes, drivers behind are warned by conspicuous flashing of the brake lights likewise to brake as hard as possible.

Lightweight seats with integrated belt system in three variants.

The lightweight seats with integrated belt system developed for the driver and front passenger of the new BMW 6 Series are available in a choice of three variants. Standard specification includes electric adjustment (with memory function) for the seat height and fore/aft setting, the backrest angle and the height of the head restraints. Sports seats, comfort seats and active seat ventilation can be ordered as an option, and Exclusive Nappa leather with extended features is available as an alternative to the standard-fitted Dakota leather. Added to which, the comfort seats are also available with the “active” function. Heated rear seats can likewise be specified.

Among the other items of equipment customers can choose from are Adaptive Headlights, a heated steering wheel, Comfort Access, ambient lighting, the Soft Close Automatic function for the doors, 4-zone automatic climate control, an electrically operated glass roof and electrically operated sun blinds for the rear window and rear side windows. The optional Navigation system Professional comes with hard drive storage for maps and the driver’s music collection, while the standard-fitted Radio Professional includes an MP3-compatible CD drive, an AUX-IN socket and a HiFi audio system with nine loudspeakers. When it comes to delivering audio pleasure of the highest order, the bespoke Bang & Olufsen High-End Surround Sound System hits all the right notes. This is a fully active system featuring digital signal processing, which means the two bass speakers, seven mid-range speakers and seven tweeters all have individual amplifiers. Its centre speaker boasts the Acoustic Lens Technology developed by Bang & Olufsen. As soon as the audio system is activated, the central element containing the integrated mid-range speaker pops up out of the instrument panel, prompting the tweeter lens to be extended at the same time.

M Sport package and BMW Individual range available from launch.

An M Sport package developed specially for the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe is available from the launch of the new car. Among the features included are an M aerodynamics package with bespoke body components for the front end, side skirts and rear apron, exhaust tailpipe embellishers in dark chrome, black-painted brake callipers, LED foglamps, a sports exhaust system for the BMW 650i Gran Coupe and 19-inch light-alloy wheels in M double-spoke design. 20-inch light-alloy wheels in M double-spoke design are also available. Customers ordering the M Sport package may also opt for the M paint finishes Carbon Black metallic and Imola Red non-metallic.

The sporting theme continues inside the car in the form of special M Alcantara/leather sports seats with blue contrast stitching, an M leather steering wheel with multifunction buttons and gearshift paddles, and aluminium hexagon interior trim strips. Plus, the M Sport package adds door sill finishers sporting the M logo and an M driver’s footrest to the mix.

Also available from launch is the BMW Individual range of products, which allows customers to tailor the exterior and interior of their BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe precisely and exclusively to their personal style. The four BMW Individual paint shades are joined in the range by BMW Individual special paint finishes and a selection of matt paint finishes. For example, the BMW Individual matt finish Frozen Bronze metallic is available exclusively for the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe. BMW Individual light-alloy wheels in V-spoke design can be specified in 19 and 20-inch format. 2014 BMW M6 Gran Coupe

A supreme combination of high performance and luxury

A third body variant of the BMW M6 high-performanc e sports car is set to be presented for the first time as the BMW M6 Gran Coupe joins the existing Coupe and Convertible models in the line-up. The new member of the M6 family brings together customary M performance characteristics with extra helpings of luxury and aesthetic appeal. The high-revving V8 enginewith M TwinPower Turbo technology and 412 kW/560 hp propels the BMW M6 Gran Coupe from 0 – 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.2 seconds. And the elegantly sporty lines of the four-door Coupe are complemented by bespoke features, such as the carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) roof. The greater interior space of the BMW M6 Gran Coupe allows two rear passengers to enjoy generous levels of on-board comfort, and there is also a third rear seat for use on shorter journeys.

Design: the beauty of majestic power delivery.

Hallmark M design features influenced directly by technical considerations – such as cooling air requirements, chassis geometry, weight balance and aerodynamics – open a clear window into the performance capability of the BMW M6 Gran Coupe. The front of the car is dominated by its large air intakes, standard Adaptive LED Headlights and an M kidney grille designed especially for this model. From the side, the first four-door Coupe in the BMW M GmbH ranks is clearly distinguishable from the BMW M6 Coupe thanks to its rear doors and 113-millimetre longer wheelbase. The low roofline flowing smoothly into the rear, the swage line – which takes in the door openers – and side windows extending well into the C-pillars accentuate the dynamically stretched silhouette.

Prominently flared wheel arches draw the eye to a track width specific to the BMW M6 Gran Coupe. The characteristic M gills, aerodynamically optimised exterior mirrors, standard BMW Individual High-gloss Shadow Line package and exclusive 20-inch M light-alloy wheels in double-spoke design underline the car’s distinctive appearance, as does another M signature – twin exhaust tailpipes positioned on the outer edges of the rear apron. Also integrated into the rear apron, and charged with the task of optimising airflow along the car’s underbody, is a diffuser made from CFRP.

This extremely lightweight, impressively strong high-tech material is used in the construction of the roof as well. Here, the visible carbon structure provides an eye-catching feature, as does a dynamic recess in the centre of the roof. This recess is referenced stylistically inside the car, the anthracite-coloured Alcantara roof liner gaining a central section in leather.

Emulating the harmonious blend of athletic prowess and elegance embodied by the exterior design, the distinctively M cockpit fuses sports car style with generous levels of space and a luxurious ambience. The driver and front passenger can look forward to M sports seats with integral belt guides. And the BMW M6 Gran Coupe’s standard specification also includes Merino leather upholstery with extended features. The rear compartment offers two or three seats, the backrests of which can split and fold down in a ratio of 40 : 60 to increase boot capacity from 460 to as much as 1,265 litres.

V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology, seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission with Drivelogic, Active M Differential.

The powertrain technology under the skin of the BMW M6 Gran Coupe guarantees the performance characteristics for which M Automobiles are renowned. The V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology produces 412 kW/560 hp. Its technical wizardry includes a pair of twin-scroll turbochargers, a cross-bank exhaust manifold, High Precision Direct Petrol Injection, VALVETRONIC variable valve timing and Double-Vanos continuously variable camshaft control. The 4,395 cc unit keeps peak torque of 680 Newton metres (502 lb-ft) on tap between 1,500 and 5,750 rpm, while maximum output is developed between 6,000 and 7,000 rpm. The engine revs to a maximum of 7,200 rpm. The BMW M6 Gran Coupe sprints from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.2 seconds on the way to an electronically governed top speed of 250 km/h/155 mph (305 km/h/189 mph if the optional M Driver’s Package is specified). Average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle stands at 9.9 litres per 100 kilometres (28.5 mpg imp) and CO2 emissions are 232 grams per kilometre.

Taking care of power transfer is a seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission with Drivelogic. The transmission’s electronic management system ensures the right gear is selected for optimum traction. It also offers the driver a Launch Control function for maximum acceleration, Low Speed Assistance for extra comfort and the Auto Start-Stop function to enhance efficiency.

Under particularly dynamic acceleration out of corners, as well as in tricky road and weather conditions, the Active M Differential at the rear axle distributes the engine’s power between the individual wheels to maximum traction-enhancing effect. Its electronically controlled multi-disc limited-slip differential works hand-in-hand with the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system and splits drive between the right and left rear wheels quickly and precisely according to the situation at hand.

Chassis technology developed to M specification.

The chassis technology of the BMW M6 Gran Coupe is also geared to harnessing the car’s sporting potential in the cause of supreme performance. Like the integral rear axle, the double-wishbone front axle has specific kinematics and components made from forged aluminium. Chassis mountings using large panels ensure dynamic forces are passed evenly through to the body. The BMW M6 Gran Coupe comes as standard with an M-specific version of the Dynamic Damper Control system and hydraulic variable-ratio rack-and-pinion steering with the M Servotronic function.

As an alternative to the standard high-performance compound braking system, the BMW M6 Gran Coupe can also be ordered with M carbon-ceramic brakes. Made from a new type of carbon-fibre compound ceramic, the discs boast even greater resistance to heat, lower weight and exceptional resistance to wear. Arranged around the gearshift lever on the centre console of the BMW M6 Gran Coupe are the buttons used to configure all the adjustable powertrain and chassis functions to personal tastes. The DSC mode,engine performance characteristics, Dynamic Damper Control mapping,M Servotronic responses and M DCT Drivelogic shift program can be selected independently of each other. All of which means the driver can put together a detailed set-up and store those settings on one of the two M Drive buttons on the multifunction steering wheel.

Exclusive and individual: high-quality range of equipment.

The standard equipment fitted on the BMW M6 Gran Coupe includes 20-inch M light-alloy wheels, leather trim, heated driver and front passenger seats, automatically dimming rear-view and exterior mirrors, an alarm system and the BMW Professional radio with hi-fi loudspeakers. Available as an alternative to the standard 2-zone automatic climate control is a 4-zone system with a control panel in the rear compartment. 2014 BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo

The new BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo adds an innovative new concept to the successful BMW 3 Series line-up. The third body variant in the current model family combines the Sedan’s dynamic, sporting genes with the practicality and versatility of the Touring, qualities which are backed up by a palpable increase in space and driving comfort. The Gran Turismo exudes aesthetic and emotional appeal, boasts a distinctive presence on the road and offers similarly pronounced driving pleasure. All of which allows the new Gran Turismo to make a compelling case for itself as both an elegant business carriage and a dynamic, comfortable tourer. Typical BMW proportions, four doors with frameless windows, a coupe-style, gently downward-sloping roofline and a large, automatically opening and closing tailgate define the distinctive exterior character of the BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo. An active rear spoiler – the first of its type on a BMW – provides visual lightness and reduces lift at touring speeds. The new BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo is 200 millimetres longer in total than the BMW 3 Series Touring, comes with a 110-millimetre longer wheelbase and stands 81 millimetres taller. However, the clever use of proportions, surfaces and lines ensures that the BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo is immediately recognisable as a member of the new BMW 3 Series range.

Power is sent to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, although BMW also offers an eight-speed automatic as an option for all engine variants. Both gearboxes link up with the fuel-saving Auto Start-Stop function.

Advanced suspension technology, featuring a large number of light-alloy components, the torque steer-free Electric Power Steering, finely-balanced axle load distribution (50:50) and a torsionally stiff lightweight body ensure outstanding handling attributes and a high degree of agility and precision.

The longer wheelbase (+ 110 mm), greater wheel diameter and baseline specification of the new BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo– which includes 17-inch wheels – result in a car offering excellent directional stability and long-distance comfort.

The quality and popularity of the BMW 5 Series are reflected in the host of prizes and distinctions awarded to the members of the model family around the world. In early 2013 the BMW 5 Series secured class victory – for the third year in succession – in the readers’ survey “The Best Cars” conducted by the German motoring magazine “auto, motor und sport”. This success came not long after the BMW 520d EfficientDynamics Edition with BMW BluePerformance technology had been voted “Car of the Future” and awarded the ADAC automobile association’s “Yellow Angel”. The BMW 5 Series as a whole had been named “Germany’s favourite car” in the same competition in 2011.

The BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo combines signature BMW proportions with an innovative body concept. The elegantly stretched coupé roofline, four doors with frameless windows and a high-opening tailgate exude sporting intent, luxurious long-distance comfort and extensive variability. Carefully targeted modifications to the car’s design shine an even brighter spotlight on its unmistakable character, which meets the highest standards across an extremely wide spectrum.

A new air intake highlights the powerful presence of the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo’s front end. The tailgate, meanwhile, has been extended rearwards and gives the roofline’s transition into the rear an even more harmonious appearance. All of which allows the car as a whole to cut a lower-slung and dynamically stretched figure. These sharpened contours have also had a positive effect on the boot capacity of the new BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo, which has been increased by 60 litres to 500 litres.

Horizontally structured and three-dimensional surfaces play a defining role in the new look of the rear end. Vibrant light and shade effects around the licence plate mount, a dynamically sweeping crease extending into the flanks and a chrome trim strip in the rear apron give the tail end a lighter and sportier feel. This impression is reinforced by the new outline of the two-section rear lights. Their horizontal layout is accentuated internally by a light design distilled into two LED light strips.

Interior: each model variant offers its own take on long-distance comfort, variability and a luxurious ambience.

New details inside all the cars in the new BMW 5 Series provide a refined premium impression and increased functionality. In all models the Control Display of the standard iDrive operating system is now bordered on both sides by high-quality chrome trim strips. And the storage compartments and cup holders in the centre console of the Sedan and Touring now have increased capacity.

Generous levels of space, exquisite materials and high-quality workmanship all contribute to the premium ambience characteristic of the BMW 5 Series model family, as do exclusive interior design details like the standard iDrive and the black-panel technology of the instrument cluster and automatic climate control system’s display.

The iDrive Controller can be ordered as an option with a touch-sensitive surface allowing character recognition. For example, a destination can be programmed into the navigation system by spelling out the desired address using finger movements on the Controller’s surface. The existing “Speller” in the Control Display can also be used to this end, and the driver can alternate freely between the two operating methods while entering a command.

Another option unique in this segment is the multifunction instrument display designed to enhance driving pleasure. The new BMW 5 Series Sedan underlines its qualities as a mile-devouring car for business use or trips away with its high level of long-distance comfort for all passengers. What’s more, its boot can hold 520 litres of cargo.

For those with further-reaching requirements when it comes to load capacity, the BMW 5 Series Touring will be the model of choice. An array of individual solutions lends the Touring a level of functionality and variability unmatched in its segment. Even when all the seats are in use it offers 560 litres of boot capacity, which can be expanded to as much as 1,670 litres as the occasion demands. The rear seat backrests split 40 : 20 : 40 as standard and can also be ordered with an adjustable tilt angle as an option. A pair of levers in the load compartment allows the folding-down process for the backrests to be initiated from the boot, and their approach into a horizontal position is now cushioned slightly to settle them into place. The load compartment cover is automatically lowered when the tailgate is closed. Plus, the tailgate of the BMW 5 Series Touring comes as standard with a Soft Close Automatic function and a rear window that can be opened separately from the tailgate itself, flipping up automatically at the touch of a button.

BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo: the perfect combination of luxurious long-distance comfort and versatility.

The BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo offers an unmatched blend of luxurious long-distance comfort and versatility, fusing the imposing elegance of a Sedan with the variable-usage interior of a Touring model and the versatility of a Sports Activity Vehicle. Its seating position – slightly raised to a height somewhere between that offered by a sedan and an SAV – allows particularly comfortable entry and exit. Rear passengers can enjoy legroom and headroom normally the preserve of luxury cars. The rear seats slide forward by 73 millimetres and the angle of their backrests can be adjusted through 33 degrees. When released from its locked position, the partition behind the rear seats follows the longitudinal movements of the seats, allowing boot capacity to grow from 500 to 650 litres. The partition and rear seat backrests can be split 40 : 20 : 40. Folding down all the elements and moving the rear seats all the way forward allows the Gran Turismo to reveal its maximum 1,750 litres of load capacity. After unloading items from the boot, customers can therefore also close the tailgate without having to put down the items they’re holding.

New to the BMW 5 Series: BMW Lines offer detailed personalisation.

BMW 5 Series customers can choose from a wide selection of exterior paint colours. New additions to the range – and available for all models – are Calisto Grey metallic, Jatoba metallic, Mineral White metallic and Glacier Silver metallic. New variants have also been added to the line-up of optional light-alloy wheels.

Exclusively composed BMW Lines are now available for the first time to all members of the new BMW 5 Series model family as an alternative to standard specification. Customers can choose between the BMW Luxury Line and BMW Modern Line design packages, which shine the spotlight on selected facets of the car’s character to great effect. Both Lines include LED fog lamps, 18-inch (BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo: 19-inch) light-alloy wheels, B-pillar trim and exterior mirror bases in high-gloss black, illuminated door pulls with chrome trim and likewise illuminated door sill strips with aluminium inserts bearing BMW lettering. Luxury / Modern badges can be found on the front side panels.

The engine line-up for the new BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo comprises two petrol units and three diesels.

The cutting-edge chassis technology underpinning all the models in the BMW 5 Series family delivers a balance of dynamic performance and ride comfort without precedent in this market segment, while the Electric Power Steering system comes with Servotronic speed-sensitive power assistance as standard. An efficient start: new entry-level diesel engine for the Sedan and Touring.

BMW TwinPower Turbo technology ensures an exemplary balance of driving pleasure and fuel consumption across the engine range. In the new entry-level diesel engine, which powers the BMW 518d Sedan and BMW 518d Touring, this package of technology consists of a turbocharger with variable inlet geometry and common rail direct injection with solenoid valve injectors. The 2.0-litre engine develops a maximum output of 105 kW/143 hp, generates peak torque of 360 Newton metres (266 lb-ft) and accelerates the new BMW 518d Sedan from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 9.6 seconds. The four-cylinder unit burns an average 4.5 – 4.9 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres (equivalent to 62.8 – 57.7 mpg imp) in the EU test cycle (CO2 emissions: 119 – 129 grams per kilometre, depending on the gearbox and tyre format specified).

The selection of diesel power plants available for the Sedan and Touring includes two four-cylinder variants – fitted in the BMW 520d producing 135 kW/184 hp and the BMW 525d with 160 kW/218 hp – and three six-cylinder units. With average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle of 4.5 litres per 100 kilometres (62.8 mpg imp) and CO2 emissions of 119 grams per kilometre, the new BMW 520d matches the figures of the 520d EfficientDynamics Edition it replaces.

Further up the range, the BMW 530d develops 190 kW/258 hp and the BMW 535d produces 230 kW/313 hp. And rounding off the line-up are two M Performance cars: the BMW M550d xDrive Sedan and BMW M550d xDrive Touring. They also use a 3.0-litre straight-six engine deploying M TwinPower Turbo technology with three turbochargers to deliver unrivalled peak output of 280 kW/381 hp and maximum torque of 740 Newton metres (546 lb-ft). Three diesel engines are available for the new BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo, powering the BMW 520d Gran Turismo, BMW 530d Gran Turismo and BMW 535d Gran Turismo.

Even more powerful, even more efficient: the V8 engine for the BMW 5 Series.

The new generation of the V8 engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology for the BMW 5 Series model family takes to the stage armed with a 10 per cent rise in output yet also significantly reduced fuel consumption. The eight-cylinder unit, found under the bonnet of the BMW 550i Sedan, BMW 550i Touring and BMW 550i Gran Turismo, now also combines its two twin-scroll turbochargers and High Precision Direct Injection with VALVETRONIC fully variable valve control. The power plant generates 330 kW/450 hp and maximum torque of 650 Newton metres (479 lb-ft) from its 4.4-litre displacement. The new BMW 550i Sedan, for example, sweeps from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 4.6 seconds. Its average fuel economy in the EU test cycle stands at 8.6 – 8.8 litres per 100 kilometres (32.9 – 32.1 mpg imp). CO2 emissions come in at 199 – 206 g/km, depending on the tyre format specified.

As well as the BMW 535i Sedan and BMW 535i Touring models, the multi-award-winning straight-six with 225 kW/306 hp also powers the BMW 535i Gran Turismo. A pair of four-cylinder petrol engines is likewise available for the Sedan and Touring. The engine powering the BMW 520i develops 135 kW/184 hp, while the unit offered for the BMW 528i from the launch of the new BMW 5 Series boasts revisions to various details and delivers 180 kW/245 hp.

The Sedan and Touring variants of the BMW 520i, BMW 528i, BMW 535i, BMW 518d, BMW 520d and BMW 525d are fitted with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard. Each of those models can also be specified as an option with the extremely fast and precise, not to mention extraordinarily efficient, eight-speed automatic transmission provided as standard for the BMW 550i, BMW 530d and 535d, as well as all variants of the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo. The eight-speed automatic now comes with a coasting function and can also be ordered with shift paddles on the steering wheel. Shift paddles are also included with the eight-speed sports automatic transmission, a standard feature of the BMW M550d xDrive, which stands out with its ultra-impressive shift dynamics.

The selection of engine variants that can be combined with the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system has also been expanded. The BMW 520d xDrive Sedan and BMW 520d xDrive Touring are both new additions to the range, the electronically controlled distribution of drive between the front and rear axle giving them a noticeable increase in traction and directional stability, not to mention an even sharper dynamic edge through quickly taken corners.

All-wheel drive is also available as an option for the Sedan and Touring versions of the BMW 528i, BMW 535i, BMW 525d, BMW 530d and BMW 535d, and the BMW 550i Sedan. The M Performance cars channel the power from their six-cylinder diesel engines through all four wheels as standard. All the models in the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo line-up – with the exception of the BMW 520d – can be ordered with xDrive.

State-of-the-art chassis technology delivers dynamics and comfort to order.

The fine-tuning carried out on the chassis for the new BMW 5 Series models makes for an even more assured conversion of engine power into dynamic performance and ride comfort. Both the double-wishbone front axle and the integral rear axle are made largely from aluminium. They allow the spring and damper systems to respond with great precision to inconsistencies in the road surface and ensure optimum road holding at all times. The overall result is a balance between sporting ability and ride comfort that no rival can better. What’s more, the car’s set-up can be adapted to suit individual needs or the driving situation at hand using the standard-fitted Driving Experience Control switch on the centre console. Pressing the button changes the driving mode, altering the responses of the accelerator and steering, as well as – if fitted – the shift characteristics of the automatic gearbox and the settings of the electronically controlled dampers.

The optional Dynamic Damper Control system adapts electronically to both the condition of the road and the driver’s style. And the car’s driving characteristics are further enhanced by the Adaptive Drive system, which includes active roll stabilisation. Electronically controlled anti-roll bars help to reduce the car’s body roll through quickly taken corners and in sudden changes of direction, for example. M Sport lowered suspension is also available as an option.

In addition to controlling the amount of speed-dependent steering assistance generated and regulating the steering angle of the front wheels, Integral Active Steering also adjusts the steering angle of the rear wheels. This system imbues the car with impressive agility in dynamic driving situations, comfortable and assured reactions when changing lanes and through corners, and optimised manoeuvrability through tight bends and in city traffic.

BMW ConnectedDrive in the new BMW 5 Series: Unique innovations for enhanced safety, convenience and infotainment.

The intelligent link-up of the driver, vehicle and outside world enters a globally unique dimension in the new BMW 5 Series model family. The range of onboard BMW ConnectedDrive technology expands on an already impressive network of driver assistance systems and mobility services designed to enhance safety, convenience and in-car infotainment. The new additions see the BMW 5 Series consolidating its leading role in the field of mobile business applications and internet-based infotainment.

The BMW ConnectedDrive range of products and services has also benefited from focused development work in the area of driver assistance systems. Among the latest innovations are systems that relieve the stress on the driver in situations such as traffic tailbacks or slow-moving traffic and provide even greater assistance with parking manoeuvres.

BMW ConnectedDrive: outstanding connectivity for business, touring and infotainment.

A SIM card fitted in the car, the extensive integration of smartphones and an array of innovative BMW ConnectedDrive functions open up new avenues for mobile communication and the use of online services in the BMW 5 Series. These features take the convenience and variety offered by the in-car office applications, navigation capability and infotainment to an unrivalled level. A hands-free facility with USB connection comes as standard on all new BMW 5 Series models.

A suite of office functions turns the BMW 5 Series into a mobile workplace – underpinned by either the customer’s mobile phone or the car’s integrated SIM card. Emails, appointments, contacts, calendar entries and notes are displayed on the cockpit’s central screen. A dictation function converts notes spoken by the driver into written text, which can then be stored and sent out by SMS or email.

BMW Apps guide the user through the large and ever increasing number of services, which can be accessed using the customer’s phone or internet connection. A unique feature worldwide is the Concierge Service, which BMW ConnectedDrive customers can use, for example, to make hotel bookings, search for addresses and telephone numbers or look up opening times. Also available are the remote functions from BMW ConnectedDrive, in-car internet usage and the online entertainment option offering a selection of some 12 million music tracks. BMW Apps includes features such as a web radio function, access to your Aupeo! personalised music library and in-car use of Facebook and Twitter. This service is constantly expanding to include new apps, which can be uploaded into the car via the SIM card or a smartphone. The car’s integrated SIM card also forms the basis for the Intelligent Emergency Call function offered as standard in numerous markets. If the optional Navigation system Professional is specified, customers can also make use of the Real Time Traffic Information option, which keeps the driver supplied with extremely precise traffic alerts and congestion reports in real time.

Unsurpassed variety, new functions: BMW ConnectedDrive driver assistance systems.

The range of BMW ConnectedDrive driver assistance systems is now also more forward thinking and richer in variety than ever. The introduction of the glare-free High Beam Assistant, plus BMW Night Vision with Dynamic Light Spot and person and animal recognition, enhances safety when driving at night. The new generation of the High Beam Assistant creates optimal visibility at all times without any input required from the driver. The system uses a camera fitted into the rear-view mirror to identify vehicles travelling up to 400 metres (approx. ¼ mile) in front. Oncoming traffic is picked up when it is still 1,000 metres (just under ¾ mile) away. With the High Beam Assistant activated, the headlights are partially masked as and when required in order to eliminate the danger of dazzling vehicles as they draw closer.

BMW Night Vision also boasts new functions. The system is supplied with data by a thermal imaging camera mounted to the front of the vehicle. It provides a real-time video image in the Control Display showing people, animals and anything else that radiates heat even if they are located outside the area illuminated by the headlights. In addition, a control unit analyses the stream of video data, looking for pedestrians, cyclists and animals that are potentially on a collision course with the vehicle. The driver is alerted to such a situation by a symbol in the instrument cluster and the optional Head-Up Display. The urgent warning function adds an audible signal. Dynamic Light Spot is a special headlight, which directs a beam of light onto the people or animals detected by BMW Night Vision, providing the driver with an additional hazard alert.

Driving Assistant and Traffic Jam Assistant: increased safety and comfort in congestion and city traffic.

The new Driving Assistant option combines Lane Departure Warning and Collision Warning with a braking function. If the system detects an unintentional deviation from the vehicle’s path, the steering wheel vibrates to warn the driver. The system can be used at speeds of at least 70 km/h (43 mph) and its camera also supplies the data required for the Collision Warning with braking function. This function can be activated at speeds of at least 15 km/h (9 mph) and uses visual and audible alerts to warn the driver of the danger of a collision with vehicles travelling ahead. The car’s brakes are preloaded at the same time to shorten its potential stopping distance.

Driving Assistant Plus provides even more extensive assistance. This system brings together Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function and the Driving Assistant to ensure, first and foremost, greater comfort and safety in slow-moving traffic and tailbacks. The driver can delegate proximity control duties to the system. The combination of a front-mounted camera and full-range radar sensors detects both vehicles travelling in front and stationary vehicles. If the driver does not react to the warning of a looming rear-end collision, Driving Assistant Plus automatically brakes the vehicle with anything up to maximum possible force, as required.

A Traffic Jam Assistant function is due to be added to Driving Assistant Plus in November 2013. At speeds of up to 40 km/h (25 mph) this function monitors both the distance to the vehicle in front and the car’s position within its lane. The Traffic Jam Assistant uses steering assistance to keep the vehicle reliably in the centre of the lane.

Fully automatic BMW Parking Assistant offers an even more comprehensive helping hand.

Another innovation due to become available in November 2013 for the new BMW 5 Series Sedan and new BMW 5 Series Touring is the fully automatic BMW Parking Assistant. The new version of the system not only carries out the steering movements required for reverse parallel parking, but also operates the accelerator and brake pedal. All of which means the BMW 5 Series can glide into the selected parking space fully automatically.

New functions have also been added to the Active Protection option. In critical situations this package of safety features deploys an array of measures to help mitigate the consequences of a possible accident. To this end, the car’s side windows and sliding sunroof (if fitted) are closed, the front seatbelts are pulled tight and the front passenger seat backrest is raised into an upright position. Active Protection now also includes the Attentiveness assistant, which analyses driving behaviour and, if necessary, suggests the driver takes a break.

Intelligent Emergency Call with automatic position finding and accident severity recognition is part of the standard specification in a large number of markets and provides fast and appropriate assistance in the event of a collision. BMW took the lead in the marketplace with this system around 15 years ago, and the latest generation sends important information – such as the car’s precise location, its chassis number, vehicle type and colour, and the data collected by sensors positioned around the car – to the BMW call centre in the event of a crash. This information confirms how many people are in the car and which airbags have been deployed, and indicates the intensity of the impact.

The latest innovations in the BMW ConnectedDrive portfolio add further depth to the already exceptionally wide range of driver assistance systems on board the BMW 5 Series. Highlights include the full-colour BMW Head-Up Display, which now also projects telephone contacts and entertainment programme listings onto the windscreen, Speed Limit Info with No Passing Info, and Lane Change Warning.

The optional rear-view camera and Surround View help to provide a better overview of the area around the car and the road ahead. In addition to the rear-view camera and the Park Distance Control sensors, Surround View also makes use of two cameras in the exterior mirrors and shows a bird’s-eye view of the car and the area around it on the Control Display. The system also includes the Side View function, which assists the driver when pulling out from narrow and concealed gateways or car park exits. Two cameras integrated into the front bumper enable the driver to monitor cross-traffic.

BMW EfficientDynamics for the new BMW 5 Series: Increasing driving pleasure, reducing fuel consumption.

The BMW 5 Series model family offers not only a case study in driving pleasure, but also a template for efficiency in the executive class. All the models in the line-up strike a balance between fuel consumption and performance none of its rivals can match. The new BMW 5 Series adds further weapons to the arsenal of technology deployed to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. Innovative powertrain management and energy management functions join optimised aerodynamic details in helping the BMW 5 Series to extend its lead in the efficiency race.

BMW TwinPower Turbo and BMW BluePerformance meet the challenges of the EU6 exhaust gas standard.

All the engines available for the new BMW 5 Series come with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. And all the members of the new 5 Series family already fulfil the stipulations of the EU6 exhaust gas standard due to come into force in September 2014. The diesel models meet the restrictions on nitrogen oxide emissions set out by the standard through extremely effective exhaust gas treatment. The BMW BluePerformance technology employed to this effect consists of either a nitrogen oxide storage catalytic converter or an SCR catalytic converter with urea injection, depending on the model.

Extensive BMW EfficientDynamics package includes innovative additions.

Like the manual gearbox fitted in the BMW 5 Series, the eight-speed automatic option also stands out with its remarkable efficiency. Indeed, the majority of 5 Series models burn even less fuel with the eight-speed automatic specified than when the same engine teams up with the manual gearbox. All the models in the BMW 5 Series line-up come as standard with features including the Auto Start-Stop function, Brake Energy Regeneration, the need-based operation of ancillary components, active air vents, Electric Power Steering and tyres with reduced rolling resistance. Elsewhere, modifications to the wheel arches and underbody panelling and a redesigned front apron contribute to further optimisation of the cars’ aerodynamic properties. The result, among other things, is a reduction in the drag coefficient (Cd value) of the new BMW 520d to 0.25.

The standard-fitted Driving Experience Control switch can be used to activate ECO PRO mode, which tweaks the engine management, accelerator responses and shift characteristics of the automatic gearbox to help the driver keep revs low and burn as little fuel as possible. Plus, efficient power usage for electrically operated functions such as the climate control system and the seat and exterior mirror heating ensures efficient energy management. A coasting mode is now also available for the first time in conjunction with the optional automatic gearbox. In ECO PRO mode this function disengages the powertrain as soon as the driver takes his foot off the accelerator at speeds between 50 and 160 km/h (31 and 99 mph). This allows the car to glide along with no engine braking effect and burning only minimal amounts of fuel.

The optional Navigation system Professional also does its bit to assist efficient driving, presenting drivers with not only the quickest or shortest route to their destination, but also the ECO PRO Route – mapped out to keep fuel consumption particularly low. Another innovation making its debut in the new BMW 5 Series range is the Proactive Driving Assistant. With the navigation system’s route guidance activated, this function advises the driver on the ideal moment to take his foot off the accelerator when approaching corners and speed-restricted areas in order to reduce fuel consumption. The BMW ActiveHybrid 5 comes with specially adapted versions of the coasting mode and Proactive Driving Assistant, helping customers to make maximum use of the car’s pure electric driving potential.
